The future of Fijian rugby looks promising as the inclusion of the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua into the Super Rugby Pacific competition will greatly benefit the development of local players.

Western Force and Flying Fijians winger Manasa Mataele is happy with the performance of the Drua in their first season and said they would do wonders next year.

“I followed the team closely ever since their first match in Super Rugby,” said Mataele.

“After their games, I would send messages to players whom I personally know. I went to Marist Brothers High School with some of the players and represented the national schoolboys’ team with some others and I am happy with the way they performed. I looked forward to watching them play each week and I am happy with what they had achieved this season.”

The Drua made their presence felt this season and Mataele believes the best is yet to come.

“There were some pretty close matches and I know teams will be weary of them next season,” Mataele said.

Their games improved when the competition continued and I am sure they will definitely achieve more wins and finish in a better position next year.

“Moving forward, I think their inclusion will definitely develop young and local players to gain experience and will give equal opportunities to them to showcase their talents on a global stage.”
