Fiji Football Association competitions manager Amitesh Pal has confirmed the commencement of the local football season despite a directive from the Fiji National Sports Commission’s executive chairman Peter Mazey in collaboration with the Ministry of Health for holding future various sporting meets without any spectators until further notice.

Pal said the first tournament on the Fiji FA calendar for 2022 would be the 2021 Digicel Futsal Inter-District Championship (IDC) at the Vodafone Arena in Laucala Bay from January 27-30.

“We’re on track for a busy season,” Pal said.

“We’ve decided to keep going ahead as scheduled, spectators or no spectators. There won’t be any delays to our local football competitions calendar. The decision to proceed was an easy one bearing in mind the possible congestion of matches for the various competitions lined-up if there was a delay on our part.

“We’re keen to go ahead.”

He said the top four teams from the Digicel National Futsal League Southern Zone were selected alongside the top four teams from the Digicel National Futsal League Western Zone to participate at the event being Ba, Lautoka, Nadi, Rakiraki, Suva, Rewa, Lami and Tailevu Naitasiri respectively to feature at the Vodafone Arena.

The reigning holders of the coveted futsal IDC crown are the Capital City boys.

Meanwhile, all sporting events would be held without any fans, which are in line with the Ministry of Health’s COVID-19 policy.
