Some civil servants who are on full pay have taken advantage of COVID-19 and haven’t been paying their town rates.

Minister for Local Government Premila Kumar has singled out teachers, policemen, nurses and other civil servants as some of those owing rates.

“These are the people who are employed, their salaries are not docked,” she said.

“They are getting full salary and yet they are in arrears.”

Mrs Kumar said municipal councils needed money to function and urged those owing rates to pay up.
