THE Fiji Teachers Union (FTU) has written to the Prime Minister to express its concern on recent appointments made at the Ministry of Education.

FTU national president Muniappa Goundar says these recent acting appointments must be made from within the ministry and individuals from outside should not be engaged.

The Minister for Education has confirmed two former SODELPA candidates, Mikaele Leawere and Losena Salabula, had been hired as consultants while Peni Senikarawa was appointed deputy permanent secretary and Joseva Gavidi had joined the Executive Support Unit for the minister.

“The FTU has already written to the Prime Minister’s office regarding these appointments.

“FTU is of the firm belief that all acting appointments are done from within the ministry based on merit. Expressions of interest should be invited and appointments should be made after thoroughly scrutinizing the applications,” said Mr Goundar.

“FTU will always remain independent and will look after the welfare of our members. In its 93 years of existence in Fiji, we have worked with many governments not only for the welfare of our members but also towards strengthening the education system.

“FTU is currently working with all the stakeholders to deal with the mess and confusion in the education system created and left by the FijiFirst government from the last eight years.
