THE Fiji Teachers Union (FTU) has acknowledged the move by Government to include experience as one of the basis of promotion for leadership roles.

FTU general secretary Agni Deo Singh said the union was glad that some changes had been made to the post processing process for head of schools.

Mr Singh said job tests had now been taken away from post processing process and teachers would now fill in application forms and teachers would need to state their knowledge, experience, skills and abilities.

He said they would then be listed for an interview.

“We are glad that there has been some change made to the post processing process after three years of the union’s consistent submissions that the open merit recruitment system for the purpose of promotion of teachers in its original form was not suitable for the teachers,” he said.

Mr Singh said this was an issue that the two teacher unions were very particular about and wanted the ministry to review.

“They have now adjusted or amended it after receiving our submission to some extent and basically our submission was that experience in leadership positions at a certain level of instructional leadership must be compulsory for promotion to heads of school level and that is something that has now been taken on board.

“Also awarding of points based on experience and qualification has been taken on board to some extent and similarly on the posts of acting appointments. This is in terms of identifying senior qualified teachers within the schools or within the districts to be appointed to act on positions rather than basing them on the job tests.”
