THE Fijian Teachers Association (FTA) is demanding that the Education Ministry releases the names of teachers who have been appointed to act as principals in state and church-owned schools.

FTA general-secretary Paula Manumanunitoga said the ministry must publicly release the said data and the performance of teachers who were appointed through the open merit recruitment and selection (OMRS) to lead in schools.

He said releasing the data would reinforce the statement by Education Minister Rosy Akbar on Tuesday that teachers were not chosen to become school leaders because of their names or colours, but their ability to deliver what was best for Fijian children.

Mr Manumanunitoga also claimed that an acting principal of a prominent high school this year was last year demoted to teach in a small high school.

This year through the OMRS, Mr Manumanunitoga said the teacher was appointed to lead one of the largest secondary schools in Fiji.

“The OMRS that demoted him one year ago, and with the same OMRS application, job test and interview data he gets promoted again,” he said.

“FTA sees this as ludicrous and without logic. At present FTA insists that the OMRS has become inconsistent, unreliable and also irrelevant due to the recent mass unfair promotions.”
