NATIONAL Federation Party leader Professor Biman Prasad claims the latest sugarcane crushing statistics from the Fiji Sugar Corporation shows its two mills – Labasa and Lautoka – need “exorbitantly high” tonnage of cane to make one tonne of sugar.

In a statement issued on Friday, the NFP leader claimed a consolidated daily report of crushing operations at the two mills from the start of crushing until Wednesday showed that the factories needed an average of 13.3 tonnes of cane to make one tonne of sugar (TCTS).

“This TCTS is alarming at a time when cane quality and cane purity is good due to cool and dry conditions,” he said.
