AS a young boy growing up in his village Nasaqa in Macuata, Manasa Ulacake never thought he would one day be a boat captain.

In fact, all he remembers as a young boy was life back in the village or simply paddling his bilibili up and down the river that snakes up to the mountainous terrain of the Macuata Province.

“Everyone had a role to play at home whether going to the farm or helping out at home doing household chores,” he said.

From a family of seven siblings, the 29-year-old was educated at the Nabekavu Primary School before finishing off his secondary education at the Waiqele Secondary School in Labasa.

“I then left behind my family on Vanua Levu to travel to attend tertiary education in Suva and enrolled in a tourism and hospitality course at the TPAF (Training and Productivity Authority of Fiji) before securing employment at the Nadi International Airport working in food and beverages inside the airport.”

He said after spending some time at the airport he decided to apply for a post at the Kokomo Private Island Resort and join its food and beverages department.

“They saw my ability, what I was capable of doing and that I am a great team player and so asked me to join activities. I did and have not regretted my choice.

“This has broadened my knowledge and has helped me a lot, I now assist guests with Hobie Cat, sailing, snorkeling and I’m also part of the entertainment group.”

For someone who was raised by the river and had no idea how to operate a boat until he was in his 20s, Manasa is now a licensed boat captain

“Kokomo gave me the opportunity to be a boat captain, and I underwent the course so now I have a Class 6 licence and am a qualified boat captain.

“Never in my life did I think I was going to be able to operate a boat, but I am glad I was given the opportunity.

“Now I am always excited to go out to the sea, and I love the ocean.”

Asked what are his plans for the future, he said, he would just look forward to the festive season and then continue with his work.
