Bula vinaka everyone

My little laugh session continues with today’s Ginger Meggs on Page 26, and his thoughts on the rules of the universe turned upside-down! It is interesting how we view things differently, and the many perspectives we pick on in our daily lives.

The riddle on the page is a bit of a bother for me… ahh! Well, I’ll just have to wait for tomorrow to get the answer I suppose. ‘What is one thing that all wise men, regardless of their politics or religion, agree is between heaven and Earth?’

Anyway, remember we are celebrating our 152nd anniversary and you can win cash. We had 10 lucky readers winning $152 each in September. Twenty readers had a chance to win $152 each in October and this month of November, 30 lucky readers will get a chance to win $152 cash each. Remember the grand prize is $15,200 cash for a lucky reader!

You can get into the draw simply by cutting out the masthead of The Fiji Times newspaper, write your name, address and a phone contact on it, and place this in a bin at a participating store near you. It’s that easy. The key numbers for us right now are 152! Our anniversary! Turn to Page 11 for details.

HEADLINES

Here are some headlines in The Fiji Times’ edition for Wednesday, November 3.

PAGE 1

Fiji prepares for 40,000 visitors

FIJI is preparing to welcome as many as 40,000 visitors in December and January and Tourism Fiji CEO Brent Hill says the interest from tourists is “amazing” and “beyond our expectations”.

He said word from the national carrier Fiji Airways and resorts was that bookings were going “through the roof” with borders about to reopen after being shut for more than seven months because of COVID-19.

PAGE 2

Fight against climate change

FIJI has done its part in the fight against climate change by pushing for the first international accord to include the 1.5-degree threshold in the Suva Declaration in 2015 and committing to net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, says Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama.

COVID-19 and children

COVID-19 poses a lower risk to children, however, secondary transmission from young school-age children can and does occur in both household and school settings, says Health Ministry permanent secretary Dr James Fong.

Aussie vaccine promise

THE Australian government fulfilled its promise of providing one million COVID-19 vaccines to Fiji when its High Commissioner John Feakes handed over 107,500 doses to Health Minister Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete today.

PAGE 3

Travel insurance

TRAVEL insurance issues for Australians planning to holiday in Fiji have been sorted, says Australian High Commissioner John Feakes. Speaking to The Fiji Times yesterday, he said the issue was partly addressed by the Australian government last week.

Former executive’s case in court

THE date for sentencing hearing of a former CEO charged with indecent assault will be decided in the Suva Magistrates Court today. The man, whose name was suppressed by court order, was found guilty by Chief Magistrate Usaia Ratuvili last week. He appeared in court on Monday for mitigation and submissions, however, prosecutor Sadaf Shameem made an application to file the victim’s impact statement to be heard in court under the Sentencing and Penalties Act after which defence counsel Hemendra Nagin would have an opportunity to cross-examine the victim.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR/ LEADER

There are some quite interesting letters on Pages 8 and 9.

The leader is on the reopening of our international border and the expected arrival of 40,000 visitors. We discuss the impact on our nation, and on our economy, and the potential for diversification.

PEOPLE

This popular section is about people. Read about: Lacey Chute

FIJI Corrections Service project engineer Lacey Chute is probably the first Fijian woman to sit behind the wheel of an ambulance during the COVID-19 crisis. She attended to COVID-19 patients when the Health Ministry implemented movement restrictions and containment zones during the second wave of the outbreak. Ms Chute said she had to leave behind her two sons and join COVID-19 frontline workers at a field hospital under the Ministry of Health’s Fiji Emergency Medical Assistance Team (FEMAT) in Suva.
