With Parliament on, we have this covered inside.

The big one on the front page of The Fiji Times’ edition for Wednesday, May 11, is on our poverty rate.

While Attorney-General and Economy Minister Aiyaz Sayed- Khaiyum says extreme poverty is almost non-existent in Fiji, Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre co-ordinator Shamima Ali said in some households infants were being fed rice or cassava water because their families could not afford to buy milk.

She was part of a media conference with FRIEND Fiji director Sashi Kiran where they said it was difficult to digest that Fiji’s poverty rate had decreased because the problems on the ground suggested otherwise.

They expressed serious concerns about a recent World Bank report which revised Fiji’s poverty level down to 24.1 per cent from 29.9 per cent.

They questioned the changes made by the World bank — eight months after the 2019-2020 Housing Income and Expenditure Survey was released by the Fiji Bureau of Statistics. Read this story in The Fiji Times.
