Fiji Nursing Association (FNA) senior executives met Deputy Prime Minister Professor Biman Prasad and Acting Health Minister Filimoni Vosarogo tonight in an emergency meeting after nurses called for the resignation of Health Ministry permanent secretary Dr James Fong among other issues. When contacted, Dr Fong said he would await the outcome of the meeting before making any comments. The nurses were also considering a silent protest on Thursday. After discussions with the Acting Health Minister, Republic of Fiji Military Forces Commander Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai said his troops were ready to assist in major hospitals should nurses decide to stage a protest over staff shortage and pay issues. That’s the big news on the front page and on Page 3 of The Fiji Times for Tuesday, August 22.

The second story on the front page is about the need for pharmacies to be owned by registered pharmacists and not businesspeople. Health Ministry permanent secretary Dr James Fong said this in the wake of the four-year sentence handed down to Fijian businessman Umarji Aiyaz Mohammed Musa by the New Zealand court after he was found guilty of trading in illicit drugs made from an over-the-counter drug called pseudoephedrine – used in the production of ‘ice’.
