In light of the COVID-19 restrictions, the Fiji Lupus Foundation hosted a virtual walk via Zoom last Saturday that had participants from around Fiji, the US, UK, India, Africa and Tuvalu joining from the safety of their homes.

The event included a Zumba session and guest speakers which included Dr Zen Low, the executive director and founder of Zen’s Medical Centre.

He discussed lupus and the various tests that need to be undertaken to diagnose lupus – indicating that Lupus was now referred to as a ‘Master of Disguise’ because the symptoms developed over months or years, making it difficult for clinicians to diagnose.

Rita Smith, a registered hemodialysis nurse in the UK, also shared her experience on the care of Lupus and indicated that on May 10 nurses at a renal unit in the UK would be wearing purple to show their support for Lupus Awareness in Fiji.

Lusiana Marama Aca, the vice president of Counterstroke Fiji, shared that this year they had been facilitating caregiving training in communities and at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital for better care of patients.

Lupus warrior Merelita Tuisue lsimei shared her experience with the disease and stroke, and the tremendous developments she has had over the years.

“Our activities for the month will now be conducted virtually via Zoom so that it can be done safely from home,” a statement from executive co-ordinator Una Tuitubou said.

“A candlelight vigil on May 8, Lupus Anniversary Night on May 15 to celebrate the foundation’s two years existence, a Kids Awards night on May 22, and to conclude the month the Plant for Lupus & Time Capsule on May 29.”

Ms Tuitubou is adamant that there will be a lot of participation from Fijians.
