PEOPLE living in low-lying areas and areas prone to flooding should remain vigilant as rain is expected to continue over the weekend.

The Fiji Meteorological Service (FMS) said a trough of low pressure remained slow moving over Fiji and was expected to affect the group over the next few days.

The FMS said people should expect occasional rain, heavy at times, and a few thunderstorms over Vanua Levu, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, eastern half and interior of Viti Levu and the Lau and Lomaiviti groups.

“The ‘flood alert’ that was previously in force for all low-lying areas adjacent to Naqali Station is now cancelled,” said FMS in a statement issued yesterday.

“For Fiji waters, mariners can expect easterly winds 15 to 20 knots with moderate to rough seas and moderate southerly swells, poor visibility in areas of heavy showers, rain and thunderstorms.

Winds expected to gradually become east to north-easterly tomorrow.”
