For a place in fashion festival

ABOUT 100 aspiring models turned up at the Fiji Museum in Suva yesterday to audition for the inaugural Fijian Fashion Festival to be held in June this year.
Organised by the Fashion Council of Fiji, upcoming models turned up in numbers in the hope of impressing the selection committee and making the cut to walk the catwalk for the fashion festival.
Council chairperson Faraz Ali said, in the past, it was difficult to source male models but that was changing as 20 models out of the 100 auditioned yesterday were males.
“Casting has gone incredibly well,” Mr Ali said.
While a few models have been confirmed out of the intended 70 selected, Mr Ali said they would host another casting session if they did not find those numbers (yesterday).
“The Fijian Fashion Festival and the Fashion Council of Fiji are very much about diversity.
“So, we are looking for models sizes 10 and 12 for the general show but also sizes 14 and 16 for the plus-size label,” he said.
“A lot of our decisions are based on these ensuring we have different body types and different ethnicities.”
He said there were quite a number of models who had modelled prior to the auditions yesterday.
“We are excited about new faces. Modelling is a very interesting profession and really develops a person if done properly.”
The selected models will be trained and mentored by Fijian international model and festival model manager Phillipa Steele.
