Fiji has recorded 172 deaths to COVID-19 with 11 lives claimed by the virus for the period July 19 to July 21.

Health Ministry permanent secretary Dr James Fong said this last night as he reported 468 new COVID-19 cases for the 24 hours to 8am yesterday.

He also said seven of the victims were unvaccinated and four had received one dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine.

“We also have recorded 75 COVID-19 positive patients who died from the serious medical conditions that they had before they contracted COVID-19; these are not classified as COVID-19 deaths,” he said.

Dr Fong said as of July 22, 428,524 adults in Fiji had received their first dose of the vaccine and 90,531 had received their second doses.

“This means that 73 per cent of the target population have received at least one dose and 15.4 per cent are now fully vaccinated nationwide.”

He said there had been 792 new recoveries reported since the last update, which meant that there were now 16,061 active cases.
