RELEGATING New Zealand from the second spot in the 2017/2018 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series points table has inspired the Fiji Airways Fiji 7s players to lift their performance at next month’s Hong Kong 7s tournament.

The side had departed the country for the USA 7s in Las Vegas sitting in third spot on the points table, but have moved a place up to second after winning the Canada 7s last weekend. Fiji is now just eight points away from top of the table leaders South Africa.

Skipper Jerry Tuwai said their performance in the last leg had put them in a good position to win the series.

He said winning the title in Vancouver would inspire the players to lift their performance to another level during the Hong Kong 7s tournament.

Tuwai said the players had set their goal of winning the 7s series, but would be taking each tournament as it came.

“First of all we thank the Lord for the win in Vancouver,” he said.

“The win has put us in a good place on the overall points table and definitely has boosted us to do well in the remaining tournaments in the series.

“We have many new boys in the team, but they have matured fast to stamp their mark in the 7s series.”

He said the side would have to dig deep during the Hong Kong 7s tournament as all teams would be targeting them.

Tuwai said the side also committed a few errors that needed to be rectified.

“We have a lot to improve especially during the Hong Kong 7s.

“We committed a few mistakes at the Las Vegas tournament and we need to improve on those mistakes.

“The boys are mentally fit and we will go back and reset our focus for the next tournament,” he added.

The side will have a one-week break before reporting back to camp on Monday next week.
