Fiji National University (FNU) students for the first time attended a virtual orientation session as classes resumed for Semester II and Quarter III.

More than 700 students registered for the online orientation at FNU campuses across the country

The orientation program organised by the Office of the Registrar provided students important information regarding university policies and procedures, academic services, learning and teaching facilities, payment options and student life activities.

Student Support Coordinator Vijayta Sharma said due to the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, it was easier to organise a virtual orientation event which students could participate from all campuses.

“We understand the importance of orientation programmes in the student-life and did not want students to be affected in any way. The University Registrar, College Deans and a representative from the FNU Student Association (FNUSA) delivered their messages to the students through the online platform,” said Sharma.

“Students were also able to post their queries and questions on the ‘I’m lost, need help’ forum,” Sharma added.

Many students benefitted from the online quiz which provided them with an opportunity to win prizes for themselves by answering correctly.  A total of 774 students participated out of which 52 students, who provided correct answers were rewarded by the University Registrar Sarita Devi and Acting Dean College of Humanities and Education Dr Unaisi Nabobo Baba.

“The quiz had 10 multiple choices related to FNU history and operations and a 15 minutes time limit was given to participants,” said Sharma.

Bachelor of Education (Secondary) Industrial Arts student Abhishek Chandra who was one of the quiz winners acknowledged the University’s effort in creating a platform for students to learn more about the institution and its history.

“As a student, I had already done my research and was overwhelmed when I got all the correct answers.  Overall the online orientation was a good initiative.  I am extremely grateful that the University provided still hosted the bi-annual orientation programme despite the setback,” said Chandra.

Another student, Shaein Prasad who is enrolled in the Bachelor of Education (Secondary) programme mentioned the online orientation platform prepared her well to kick start the new academic term.

“I am glad to have participated in the online programme which allowed me to better understand the University and its operation.  I am already excited for this semester,” she mentioned.

The enrolment for Semester 2 closed on 31st July but students can still access the online orientation on their moodle account through the following link: https://elearn.fnu.ac.fj/course/view.php?id=2830
