FNRL to launch schools event

THE Fiji National Rugby League will officially launch its primary schools competition next weekend.

This was confirmed by FNRL chief executive officer Timoci Naleba in a new approach to develop the game from an early age.

He said the primary schools competition would be crucial to the development of the sport and thanked the Education ministry for giving the green light to involve primary school students.

Naleba said grassroots development was crucial for any sport.

“Primary school and women’s competitions will be the new addition for our yearly competitions,” he said.

“The primary schools competition will be launched after the Easter weekend.

“What we have missed in the last 20 years is the players’ development as we have concentrated more on clubs.

“This new competition gives rugby league a major scope of development and become a basis of developing the skills and culture of rugby league.”

Naleba said the primary school competition would also hype up the secondary school competition.
