THE Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF) has bought land from the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) to build a new manufacturing subdivision in Navutu, Lautoka.
This was revealed by Minister for Economy, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, as part of Government’s plans to take advantage of Fiji’s strengths in the information technology sector.
“FNPF, together with the Ministry of Commerce and Trade, is working with IFC (International Finance Corporation) to build an IT/clean manufacturing subdivision in Navutu in which FNPF has bought some land from FSC,” he said.
“They are able to put up a subdivision there.”
He said the Sugar City was a prime location for the new IT hub.
“The reason we chose Lautoka, of course, was because of its proximity to the Nadi airport and its proximity to the seaport.
“So those are some of the strategic thinking that’s going on behind the scenes.”
He said there were opportunities in the manufacturing and assembly lines that could be lucrative for Fiji.
“We believe there are opportunities in the manufacturing and assembly lines. There are some countries that no longer want to have their manufacturing and assembly lines in countries like China and far-away countries.
“They want to bring it closer to home and Fiji, of course, has a good brand.
“Our climate change credentials and our environmental credentials are pretty good and we want to be able to build on that.”
