The rise in wheat price will have a huge impact on my business, says Lautoka market juice and pastry seller Seci Naidamu.

He said the two key ingredients for his business, flour and sugar, costs more than what he made in a day.

“I have to buy 4kg sugar and 10kg flour every day which means I spend more than $50,” he said.

“Then I come and sell hoping to make that much money or at least cover the cost.

“But I know I can’t make that much because people are not buying.”

Mr Naidumu said after the last price increase of sugar and flour, he tried increasing the price of juice and pastries.

“When I put the price up from $1 to $2, no one bought juice or pie.

“I had to bring it back down to $1 so that I could keep my business running.”

He said despite Government’s stall fee waiver, vendors were running their businesses at a loss.

“The subsidy is good, but when you look at our expenses it doesn’t make any difference.”
