About 70 Vunitogoloa villagers in Rakiraki had their church service disrupted on Thursday night after floodwaters entered the building.

Heavy rain for more than two hours saw flood waters overflow a river running parallel to the village.

“We were having a prayer session and all of a sudden floodwaters started coming in,” said turaganikoro Josefa Manakiwai.

“This is the first time this much flood waters entered the church, and this could be due to the raising of the main highway road that goes through our village,’ he said.

“We had to stop the church service and move whatever we could to high grounds.”

Mr Manakiwai said they would have to look at ways to address the issue.
