FLOODwaters didn’t spare Arvin Kumar’s farm at Waikalou settlement, Deuba, destroying about $20,000 worth of vegetables.

A team from this newspaper met the 33-year-old who resides in a corrugated iron home with his family.

The home is on a one-acre piece of land which they use for farming vegetables as their main source of income.

“The flood started on Thursday because of heavy rain and since then floodwaters have not receded,” he said.

“It has destroyed the vegetables on my farm such as eggplants, cabbages, watermelons and pumpkins, I’ve lost close to $20,000.

“It’s devastating because I’ve just started farming and it’s my family’s main source of income. So I am trying to figure out how I will recover all this.

“I was looking forward to sell the vegetables at the Navua market as I was expecting to harvest them within the next few months.”

He said now he had to look for other means to help support his family if the weather worsened over the next few days.

“We will have to start from scratch and this is the case for us after every flood because we have to purchase manure for the soil to recover our farm- land.”

Tomasi Pene, who also resides in the area, was spotted wading through floodwaters with his family as they tried to access the Queens Rd.

He said their house was on the verge of being flooded.

“For us this is nothing new because this is a low-lying area, so whenever there is heavy rain it gets flooded,” Mr Pene said.
