PARENTS and guardians will face a five-year jail term and $10,000 fine if they fail to ensure the safety of their children during a natural or man-made disaster, states the draft Police Bill 2020.

The proposed law requires parents, guardians, or any other person to ensure a child is made aware of adverse weather, natural or man-made disaster.

Parents and guardians are to ensure that their child is kept safe during any natural or man-made disaster or area affected by any adverse weather.

“As a result of such wilful, reckless, or negligent act or omission, such person in his or her charge or under his or her control is harmed, commits an offence and upon conviction, shall be liable to imprisonment not exceeding five years or to a fine not exceeding $10,000 or to both.

“Any person who fails to comply with any provisions of this section may be detained or arrested without warrant.”

The draft Police Bill 2020 is presently open for public submissions.
