Five Fijians for HK 10s champion

FIVE Fijian players have been included in the UBB Gavekal side as they target their second GFI HKFC 10s title next week.

Former Fiji Airways Fiji 7s players Samu Bale and Vasikali Mudu will team up with Sakeo Railoa, Keponi Paul and Leveni Kurimalawai in the two-day tournament.

Bale was the star player for the Hong Kong-based UBB Gavekal side when they won their first HKFC 10s title last year.

Bale scored four tries in the team’s surprise victory and he was assisted by fellow Fijians Lemeki Tulele, Josua Vici and Glen Cakautini.

Just as he did in 2017, Fiji 7s coach Gareth Baber helped in securing the services of the five Fijian players for the UBB Gavekal side. The team won the bowl on their debut in 2015 and finished runners-up in the third-tier competition in 2016.

Team manager Jean-Baptiste Aldige said they were happy to have Bale back in the team especially after he had finished as the top try scorer at the Fiji Bitter Marist 7s last weekend.

On Wednesday, UBB will face the star-studded Classic Wallabies – featuring eight former Australia internationals including Lote Tuqiri, Wendell Sailor, Luke Burgess and Matt Hodgson – as well as A-Trade Overseas Old Boys and Hunter + Boo East Africans in Pool A.

The other team in the tournament with a lot of Fiji influence is the Samurai International which has selected former Fiji 7s star Nasoni Roko as coach and fiver former national 6s players in the side.

Former skipper Emosi Vucago will team up with Olympic gold medallist Masivesi Dakuwaqa, Livai Ikanikoda, Sainivalati Ramuwai and Sitiveni Waqa in the tournament to be held on Wednesday and Thursday nest week.
