Jovial, enthusiastic and warm are some of the words that best describe Nigel Fiu. Should you get the chance to meet the Lautoka man, you would not know the challenges he has overcome or is facing at the present time.

A few years ago, his wife developed cancer and had to relocate to New Zealand for treatment.

Last year, after 30 years of service to the country as a flight attendant with Fiji Airways, Mr Fiu was sent home.

Despite his personal and professional challenges, he continues to soldier on.

Those in the Sugar City and surrounding communities know him as a philanthropist who is part of Allen Lockington’s “kava parliament squad”, a group that has been visiting those most affected by the economic fallout of COVID-19.

And if you were a frequent traveller with Air Pacific and subsequently Fiji Airways, you would recognise him as the jovial, cheerful and warm gentleman who would go out of his way to ensure you enjoyed your flight. But it is his charity work that gives him the most satisfaction these days.

The Fiji Times has been highlighting the stories of former Fiji Airways staff members on its Facebook page and YouTube.

This week Mr Fiu shares his story.
