Fisheries ministry hesitant to install ice plants on remote islands

THE Fisheries Ministry is hesitant to install ice plants on remote islands because it demands a lot of water which is scarce on many of these areas within Fiji’s maritime zones.
Responding to requests for such plants on Kioa and Cikobia, Fisheries Minister Semi Koroilavesau said it would cost $800,000 to establish one ice plant.
He said such operations needed large volumes of water which would be a problem for islands during prolonged dry periods.
