First responders in the Western Division and relevant government agencies are continuing to monitor the weather particularly in areas which have experienced multiple incidences of flooding.
Commissioner Western Apolosi Lewaqai said initial assessments had been carried out by teams and non-governmental partners to determine the extent of the damage caused by the widespread floods.
“We are thankful that support has also been confirmed by the Republic of Fiji Military Forces which has always been the norm in the case of natural disasters and when there is a need for them to assist,” he said.
“We are also grateful that our first responders are still on standby, those in the Fiji Police Force, the National Fire Authority who understand what they need to do in these situations.
“Our CSOs who are also on the ground carrying out initial assessments through their respective members in their communities and they continue to provide us with updates and information that we need.”
He said NGO partners were also prepared to assist those affected by the floods.
“We are very grateful that most of them are on standby and are ready to help us.
“In terms of households, teams are also on standby to assist if needed.
“Right now, according to the weather reports and we still continue to receive some rainfall so we will continue to monitor the situation on the ground.”
According to the Fiji Meteorological Service, a series of trough of low pressure with associated cloud and showers are expected to affect the country throughout the week.
Occasional showers and thunderstorms are expected over the Yasawa and Mamanuca groups.
