The first 50,000 paediatric Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines for children aged five to 11 years were rolled out at Nehru Primary School yesterday. And first to roll up his sleeve was President Ratu Williame Katonivere’s grandson, seven-year-old Lepani Vaniqi. “As a grandfather, I too wish to ensure my grandchildren will receive the best protection against COVID-19,” Ratu Williame said.

“That is why we are gathered here today (yesterday) as our children have the right to be safe from COVID-19.

“Our children are likely to suffer from severe COVID-19 if they become infected.” He said through vaccines the country was in a much better place, but the crisis was far from over.

“Vaccines are what protect us from the difficulty of the pandemic and it also continues to keep the worst of the virus at bay.” He urged parents and guardians to do the right thing and get their children vaccinated.

“Yes our children will experience some side effects as is normal like any other immunisation.” Ratu Wiliame thanked the New Zealand government for the vaccines.
