A FIRE which broke out along a chain of shops in Sigatoka has been described as the biggest blaze to hit the riverside town after it burnt through five businesses in the central business district area.

“This has got to be one of the biggest so far,” said Sigatoka Town Council CEO Tulsi Ram.

“We have no idea where it actually started but it started at about 1pm and affected Max Val-u, Meenoo’s, Ravendras Restaurant, Home and Living and Courts.

“We will wait for the National Fire Authority to conduct its investigations and see where we will go from there.”

When contacted at 5.35pm yesterday, NFA chief fire officer Qionilau Moceitai said the blaze was under control.

“Our team is working on the hot spots as we speak,” he said.

“I cannot comment on where the fire started until such time as we complete our investigations.”

Huge plumes of smoke billowing from the fire brought Sigatoka Town to a standstill as NFA officers fought to contain the blaze.
