Three families are now homeless after a fire destroyed their Sigatoka home this morning.

The National Fire Authority reported that the incident occurred at Vunikavika Settlement.

The NFA stated that it was alerted of the house fire at 7.50am via a 910 call.

It stated that the fire team from the Sigatoka Fire Station responded to the emergency call but upon arrival at the scene, the four-bedroom corrugated iron and timber house fully engulfed in flames.

NFA chief executive officer Puamau Sowane said three families occupied the house and they all lost their belongings in the blaze.

“The intensity of the fire and windy conditions at the time of the incident caused the fire to spread quickly. The firefighters fought hard against windy conditions to stop the fire from further spreading and managed to save two houses which were also a few meters away from the burning house,” Mr Sowane said.

He said this fire incident was the third residential fire within a span of only four days and it raised a lot of concerns.

“The increase in residential fire incidents indicates that people are not taking fire safety seriously around their homes and properties.”
