Update: 4:36PM NON-resident ambassador of Finland to Fiji Lars Erik Backstrom presented his credentials to President Jioji Konrote at the Borron House in Suva today.

Mr Backstrom began his career in foreign service as an attache’ at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Helsinki, Finland, in 1982.

And prior to his appointment to Fiji, he has served as ambassador to Australia and New Zealand since 2016 after which he was accredited to Solomon Islands, Samoa, Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu in 2017.

He has also served as ambassador to Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, People’s Republic of China and Mongolia.

Mr Backstrom who will be based in Canberra, Australia, presented his credentials today after inspecting a guard of honour by officers from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces.

He has been recognised in the Guinness Book of Records for having visited all independent countries in the world before turning 40 – he first came to Fiji in 1976.
