FIJI National University (FNU) student Akuila Rasega, who was allegedly murdered in Suva last week Thursday, was laid to rest yesterday. Family and friends of Akuila, or known to many as “Lucky” gathered at the Raibevu Methodist Church in Tacirua, Nasinu to pay their last respects to someone described as a person who had always found a way to put a smile on people’s faces.

Akuila’s uncle, Viliame Verealawa, said he was always a joyful person who loved making everyone around him happy.

“He was a very well-mannered and a helpful boy who was always a down-to-earth person,” he said. “With the type of person he was, we can see it in the crowd that attended his funeral today (yesterday) to pay their last respects.”

Mr Verealawa said he was brought up in a very humble family where the littlest of the things mattered to him.

“With his education, he didn’t show the people the type of upbringing he had,” he said.

He said his family expected a lot from him because he was the only person in the family to reach university and was close to attaining his achievement from the FNU. He said something that his family would miss was his socialising with the people in the community.

“When he was on semester break, he would bring all the children in the neighbourhood and spend time with them,” he said.

“One thing that still hurts us the most is the thought of his body that was lying in the morgue for almost one week unidentified.

” Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed police were still continuing their investigations into the alleged murder case with no arrests made.
