Agriculture underpins economies across the Pacific.

This was told by Pacific Community (SPC) Land Resources Division (LRD) director Karen Mapusua during the opening of Fiji MOA Seed Processing and Storage Unit at Sigatoka Research Station earlier today.

“SPC is the key technical organisation in the Pacific providing support around sustainable seed systems,” Ms Mapusua said.

She said the Pacific Community had implemented several programs and projects around seed systems over the past years.

Chief guest Minister for Agriculture Dr Mahendra Reddy said the establishment of a seed unit would improve efficiency and increase volume of seeds produced and stored appropriately.

The Fiji MOA Seed Processing and Storage Unit was funded through a grant provided by the Pacific Seeds for Life (PS4L) Programme coordinated by SPC’s Land Resources Division (LRD) in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture Fiji and the Manaaki Whenua Landcare Research New Zealand (MWLR).
