The Ministry of Fisheries plan to support Fiji’s coastal fisheries by venturing into smart partnerships through research to enable more science on high value species.

Officiating recently at the World Fisheries Day celebrations, Minister Osea Naiqamu said the ministry had so far been able to promote two species, including tilapia and shrimp.

“These species are part of Fiji’s food security commodities as they could be farmed and sustained by our communities,” Mr Naiqamu said.

“The ministry is also re-setting its research focus into the high value species that has readily available markets both domestically and internationally. Species like beche-de-mer or sea cucumber, giant clams and coral trout that are known to fetch more revenue and foreign exchange.

“As part of this year’s World Fisheries Day, I am pleased to announce that the ministry is now in a position to roll out the breeding of beche-de-mer and giant clams and we are actively searching for partners to help farm these species.”
