The Education Ministry will spend $20 million from its $704.6 million allocation in the 2021-2022 budget and $8m from the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade for the reconstruction of schools.
This, according to Education Minister Rosy Akbar during debate on the 2021-2022 Appropriation Bill in Parliament on Monday.
“Even during this pandemic, this Government had thought of our students in trying to build conducive facilities for our students,” she said.
“A number of schools that sustained their damage through TC Winston, TC Gita, TC Yasa and TC Ana will be assisted by this $20 million.
“Rehabilitation works in six other schools damaged in TC Winston will also continue and the $8 million that we have allocated for this year under DFAT will also help in the reconstruction of three schools in the Northern Division. In this year’s budget, we will continue with the reconstruction work, and from 2017, the Government through the Ministry of Education and the Construction Implementation Unit has already spent $218 million in the rebuilding of new schools and this work will continue in the next financial year.”
