“MORE than 50 per cent of the population is below the age of 27 and that is why we reduced the retirement age to 55.”

These were the words of FijiFirst party general secretary Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum at the FijiFirst campaign in Laucala Bay yesterday.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said the retirement age was 55 from 1987 until the Laisenia Qarase government it was changed to 60.

According to Mr Sayed-Khaiyum the political parties and governments of the past used the retirement age in their favor for support but the current FijiFirst government reduced it to 55 so that more jobs could be created for the youths.

He said this while answering to questions by party supporters present at the event.
