The office of the Speaker of the Fiji Parliament says that in light of the suspension of the registration of the FijiFirst Party, all 24 members are not entitled to take part in parliament proceedings or any parliament committee for the duration of the suspension.

In a statement issued yesterday, the Speaker’s office confirmed it had received correspondence from the Acting Registrar of Political Parties informing that the FijiFirst Party had been suspended with immediate effect from Wednesday, May 17, 2023.

The suspension of the party also means that all 24 members are precluded from participating in all related activities such as representing Parliament in meetings, workshops, seminars, conferences, assemblies, and so forth, for the period of suspension until the suspension of the registration is lifted.

“In addition, all 24 members of the FijiFirst Party cannot be entitled to any remuneration from Parliament for the duration of the suspension,” it said.

On Wednesday, the Fijian Elections Office (FEO) stated that four political parties including FijiFirst, We Unite Fiji, All People’s and New Generation had been suspended and could not operate or function as a political entity unless they presented audited financial statements to the acting Registrar of Political Parties.

The FEO stated the four parties had a 30-day suspension and 60 days to either present the required documents or face deregistration.
