Fijians lose, in 6th spot

FIJI women’s basketball team finished sixth in the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Women’s Asia Cup 2017 in Bangalore, India yesterday.
The Laisiasa Puamau-coached side lost to Singapore 65-80 in the fifth place playoff.
“With this being our first time in the event, it is a great result that we can be build upon for the future.
“Singapore pushed out to an early lead and Fiji did everything they could to fight back, but eventually fell 65-80. This is an amazing improvement from their first match against Singapore, creating a 27-point turnaround from their first game,” Basketball Fiji website reported.
“We look to Mili Koyamainavure who was impressive at the event, she was even featured in the local ESPN contingent here in India.”
Koyamainavure scored 31 points on 54.5 per cent shooting, 11 rebounds and four assists.
Dale Wise was also strong with her performance where she added 15 pojnts and had seven rebounds.
“After this performance, Fiji should have confidence that with more preparation time and future planning they could one day challenge to move up to Division A of Asia and join fellow Oceania teams Australia and New Zealand,” the website further reported.
“For now, the Fiji Women should be proud of the efforts and keep their heads held high.”
Meanwhile, India won the title beating Kazakhstan 75-73 in the final.
