The eight-member Fiji team to the World Scouts Jamboree in South Korea is in high spirits despite a heat-wave affecting participants and forcing countries such as USA and the United Kingdom to withdraw from the meet.

South Korea sent dozens of military doctors and nurses to help out at the campsite after hundreds of teenage participants fell ill from the heat wave gripping the country with at least 600 participants treated for heat-related ailments.

Fiji Scout Association’s International Commissioner Kailash Pillay said he had been in touch with the team daily in the coastal site in Saemangeum.

“The South Korean Government has taken a number of precautionary measures for participants.

“We have plenty supplies of bottled water, wet towels, electrolytes, cooling areas around the campsites and activity areas, cooling buses on the road and regular free ice cream,” he said.

“Some rigorous outdoor activities were closed. “Each participant has received an umbrella, a bucket hat and a handheld rechargeable fan.

“We are fully utilising the above to keep us hydrated. “You will also notice the boys wearing white sleeves. “These are cooling sleeves which keep us cool during hot days.”

About 43,000 participants from around the globe are attending the World Scouts Jamboree that ends on August 12.
