Fijians in 22nd spot

TEAM Fiji has been ranked 22nd at the 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games which ended in the Bahamas yesterday.
In the last few events, athletics’ Kolinio Radrudru came in 8th in the semi-final of the 200 metres, swimmer Taichi Vakasama clocked his personal best in the 200 metres individual medley in 2.12.40, Temafa Yalimaiwai clocked 2.17.12 in the 200 metres butterfly while Rosemarie Rova clocked 2.36.92.
Chef de mission Tomasi Tiko said it was a great exposure and experience for the young athletes to test out their ability when it came to international tournaments.
“Bigger picture is Tokyo Olympics and these athletes have set a platform for themselves to perform to their best,” Tiko said.
Minister for Youth and Sports Laisenia Tuitubou said the Government had invested in these youths to perform and they really performed well winning two bronze.
“The long-term investment that we’re focusing on is for the next four years to develop our youths,” Tuitubou said.
“Whatever different sports they play the Government will support them.
“We’ve seen excellent outcomes from our national U21 netball team and now our youth teams, hats off to them for a wonderful performance.”
