Hindus across the country marked their biggest religious event – Diwali, the festival of lights – in a rather muted manner on Thursday.

Fireworks traders said business was not as brisk as previous years and while some households put up lights, they were not as big and bold as in the recent past.

The socio-economic impact of COVID-19 had many families holding back and prioritising real and immediate needs instead of firecrackers and sweets.

The Fiji Times news team captured images across the country of Fijians celebrating the festival.
