FORMER Flying Fijians skipper and second rower, Ro Alifereti Doviverata expects the Fiji Airways Fijiana XV to play more international matches as they target a spot at the 2021 Women’s Rugby World Cup.
The Fijiana XV which is coached by Doviverata, returned from Australia on Sunday after a successful two match tour.
The side beat Brumbies Women 33-7 and thrashed Hunter Women 66-7.
Doviverata said the short tour was a learning experience for the players.
“We set our goals to win two matches and we achieved that,” he said.
“We are grateful that the girls managed to win, especially after our last game was in 2016. Last year we did not have any game.
“I’m glad how the girls responded in the seven days we had for the two match tour. They did what all we told them to do so it was a positive result.”
Doviverata said among their long term plan was to secure a spot at the 2021 WRWC.
“This is the starting and I’m glad that we have lifted the image of the Fijiana XV,” he said.
“We need to play more international matches so we can compete with the Tier One nations.
“The Brumbies have shown interest in five of our girls, but there is nothing confirmed yet.
“The players will take a break and then return to participate in the Skipper Cup when it resumes.”
England, France, Portugal, New Zealand, Australia and Wales are the six countries bidding to host the 2021 World Cup.
