Fijiana to defend 7s title

FIJI Airways Fijiana 7s team will defend the Crest Na Iri tournament at the upcoming Mana Whey Coral Coast 7s scheduled at Lawaqa Park this month.

Head coach Iliesa Tanivula is planning to field a development team for the event since the main team would be participating at the HSBC World Sevens Women Series in Sydney one week after the Coral Coast 7s event.

He said he wanted the players to be injury free for the Sydney 7s which was why he would be resting his key players.

“Fijiana will be defending the Coral Coast 7s women title and we will probably have a development team for the tournament,” said Tanivula.

“We don’t want to go to Sydney with injury concerns as we want the players to be fit and fresh.

“We want to use this tournament and test our combination against some of the top teams in the country and against national teams from Hong Kong and Vanuatu.”

Tanivula said he would also use the tournament to identify new talents with the need to increase his player base.

‘We need to have a good player base and we will be using the Coral Coast 7s to identify some new talents.”

He said the players would resume training this week and he would be selecting his two teams from the 22 players in camp before the Coral Coast 7s and Sydney 7s.

The Coral Coast 7s will start with the Uprising Youth 7s on January 17-18 followed by the men and women 7s competition on January 19-20.
