Fijiana in top eight

THE Telecom Fijiana side made it through to the Cup quarter-finals in the fourth leg of the World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series in Canada.

The Iliesa Tanivula-coached side is scheduled to play New Zealand in the quarter-final today.

In the other quarters, Australia will take on Russia, USA will play against France while host Canada takes on England.

Fijiana played series leaders New Zealand in the opening pool match and went down fighting 38-14.

The Ana Maria-skippered side put on a great performance against England and drew the match 19-all before beating Spain 20-5 to make the top eight.

Tanivula is eyeing a better performance in this leg to improve their standings in the series.

He said playing against New Zealand and England was a big motivation for the side.

Meanwhile, the increasing competition in the series had impressed World Rugby sevens general manager Avan Lee.

“It was great to be here to witness an excellent opening day of sevens rugby in Langford in front of a huge, passionate crowd. It was a great advertisement for the game,” Lee told World Rugby.

“All the top teams are on form, the hosts have performed very well and Sunday (Monday) is shaping up to be even better.

The quarter-finals promise some more thrilling matches as the road to Rio gets closer.”
