Fijiana finishes sixth

THE Fiji Airways Fijiana team finished in sixth spot at the HSBC Kitakyushu Sevens in Tokyo, Japan on Sunday.
The Iliesa Tanivula-coached side was defeated by a high flying Russia side 30-7 in the fifth place final. The win for the Russians means they take the fifth spot for the second year in a row. ‘
Russia’s captain Alena Mikhaltsova scored a brace in the 30-7 victory over Fiji and took her tally for the tournament to an impressive 11 tries. The Fijiana side now sits on 10th spot in the HSBC World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series with 15 points.
The women’s series will now head to its last two tournaments in Langford, England and in Paris, France. The Fijiana side finished in fourth spot in the 2016/2017 series.
Australia leads the current series points standing with 56 points, New Zealand in second spot with 50 points while Russia is at third spot with 42 points. Commonwealth Games 7s women’s winner New Zealand were the popular champions with the Japanese crowd after the world champion beat first-time Cup finalists France 24-12 to complete a successful defence of the HSBC Kitakyushu Sevens title on Sunday.
