Fijian unity key to sports victories

FIJIAN rugby sevens fans are in for an exciting four months of top action rugby feast when the Hong Kong 7s kicks off tonight.

With other sports such as Netball Fiji in the Commonwealth Games, the thrills and spills will be so intense that sporting fans are at risk of heart-related problems and could even suffer heart attacks if they are not careful about their daily lifestyles.

Athletics, boxing weight-lifting and other sports will be going on a daily basis and many programs in villages and settlements may have to be shelved as participants are either busy watching the action, catching up with sleep or just too grog doped to be useful for any other purposes.

So fasten your seat belts, exercise regularly and for those with a weak heart, keep the medicine box within reach or learn to control your emotions and not get carried away.

For sevens, three days in Hong Kong, before moving to Australia for two days a week later, then two days in Singapore, Paris in May, London in June and culminate with the Rugby World Cup Sevens on July 20-22 at San Francisco.

Gareth Baber and his men embark on one of the busiest sevens seasons and are targeting to win in Hong Kong and take over the lead from South Africa in the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series, win their first gold medal in Gold Coast’s Commonwealth Games and then the Melrose Cup.

We have a formidable line-up, the winning combination from Hamilton and Vancouver sevens tournaments and every Fiji fan will not be settling for anything less.

While 16 players have been selected in the sevens squad in the HSBC WRSS tournament in Hong Kong, Baber does not have any problems with reserves for the big long haul as his squad members will also be in action at the Carlsberg 10s competition.

Fiji Airways Fiji 7s team squad members Sakeo Railoa, Keponi Paul and Ratu Filise playmaker Levani Tani will be maintaining fitness during the 10s competition also in Hong Kong and could be drafted in for Singapore or even the Melrose Cup if Fiji is hit by injuries to key players.

Fiji will have to first survive Samoa, New Zealand and Russia in pool play but Baber is excited of the chance to make a record four straight victories.

In 1993 Ratu Kitione Vesikula’s team came close to winning four tournaments in a row but a missed conversion in the final gave victory to Samoa who won 14-12. Fiji had won the 1990, 1991 and 1992 for the first three in a row.

In 1993 they also failed to win the Melrose Cup.

Our local Skipper Cup rugby competition will also be in full swing and sporting fans wishing to last the whole season would be advised to also begin regular exercise, if they have not done so and consumers of the amber and brown liquid should take things lightly and not overindulge or better still sober up.

Moderation is the best approach on things like sleep, food and drinks. Already health authorities are giving out plenty of advice regarding other communicable and non-communicable diseases making the headlines and already claiming lives on a regular basis.

In 2016 we had Cyclone Winston and won the Rio Olympics gold medal. We suffered together before celebrating together and people went out of their way to help the cyclone victims.

There were a lot of prayers going into heaven.

In 2018 the same situation is repeated and before we forget everything and get stuck into watching our sports heroes, let us first lend a hand to flood victims and be united in prayer for their quick recovery.

Unity in spirit during natural disasters is the winning formula to also produce unity in our campaign for sporting glory.

Past experiences have taught us that it is a packaged deal.
