A local non-governmental organisation (NGO) established to curb Fiji’s unmanageable traffic problem has tapped into the tourism sector to expand its service.

Qaqi Mai: Bike Share Fiji is four years old and is the brainchild of youth entrepreneur Eliki Dakuitoga who believed biking would be an enhanced and sustainable transportation mode for daily commuters.

Yesterday, representatives from the NGO, Maria Bavou and Faith Williams, were part of the Tourism Fiji Cruise Symposium at the Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa with an aim to register their network in the hospitality industry and let their sustainability initiative known to the masses.

“We hope to let our message known to stakeholders about this environmental initiative,” Ms Bavou said.

“Biking can be a preferred mode of transportation for the hundreds of visitors who travel to Fiji annually and particularly those who come on board big cruise ships.

“We believe that when they disembark they can utilise bikes to travel around their destination of choice during their short stay.”

Ms Bavou believed yesterday’s summit provided a huge platform for them to market their product and learn more about sustainability initiatives from tourism stakeholders.

She explained that they represented the organisation on the avenue of bikes on Fiji’s ports to service cruise liner tourist tours visiting our shores via big cruise liners.

“A big vinaka vakalevu to Tourism Fiji for supporting local businesses getting into the sustainable transport sector of the tourism market.

“It is a highlight of our growth to build networks and maintain a close relationship with nature to which we all owe our human ambition.”

The NGO also received its Land Transport Authority of Fiji’s official support document this week, a document that holds the power towards the green mobility space.

The organisation was also one of the five winners of the Pacific Greenpreneurs Incubator Program and is slowly working towards its aim of being a leading sustainable transport provider in the country.
