Fiji’s Health Minister Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete has acknowledged the assistance of delegates of the 74th World Health Assembly (WHA) in trying to contain the COVID-19 pandemic.
While presenting his report via virtual conference as chairman of Committee B, Dr Waqainabete said the professionalism, diligent work and consistent assistance of fellow delegates had been formidable.
“As we are coming to the end of the 74th Assembly, it is time for us to jointly translate the decisions we make together here into actions back in our countries,” the Fijian Health Minister said.
Dr Waqainabete acknowledged the efforts of his fellow Committee B members from Denmark, Bangladesh and Barbados in considering and approving key resolutions under the World Health Organization (WHO).
“The main highlights of Committee B include the adoption of the draft decisions on WHO reforms related to governance, recommitting to malaria elimination, and the draft resolution of the process for the election of the WHO Director General.”
Apart from adopting the draft decision to accept WHO results report for the program budget for 2020-2021 and the external auditor’s report, Dr Waqainabete said the committee adopted decision addressing social and medical issues.
“The committee adopted decisions based on health workforce, strengthening nursery and midwifery, social determinants of health and ending violence against children, health systems strengthening and multi-sectorial approaches.”
