Expect the the upcoming general election to be held on a Wednesday, no later than the first week of January 2023, says Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

He said this at a media conference during the opening of Fiji National University’s College of Business Hospitality and Tourism Management building in Nasinu yesterday.

The A-G said that while the election date was the prerogative of the Prime Minister, he could assure the Fijian people that the polls would be held on a Wednesday, no later than the first week of January 2023.

He said since 2014, the general elections had always been held on a Wednesday to prevent employees from taking extended leave.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said employees would have a paid public holiday on the day to allow them to stay home and cast their votes at their designated polling venue.

He reiterated that the general election would be held 45 days after the Writ of Elections was issued by the PM.

“How many Wednesdays are there from now, not many. So you can do the calculation,” the A-G said.

He also urged those who had turned 18 to get registered and advised all eligible Fijians to vote on election day.
