Fiji women footballers qualify for OFC Nations Cup

THE Vodafone Fiji women’s football team has for the first time qualified to the final of the OFC Nations Cup underway in New Caledonia.

Preliminary qualifiers Fiji defied all odds to beat three time finalist Papua New Guinea 5-1 in the semi-final yesterday.

Fiji had to come from behind after conceding in the 11th minute.

Trina Davis and Luisa Tamanitoakula scored for Fiji for the 2-1 half-time lead.

Fiji’s Cema Nasau missed a penalty in the 35th minute of the match.

Davis added a second in the second spell while Nasau and Sofi Diyalowai also got on the score sheet for a comfortable victory in the end.

Fiji plays New Zealand in the final at 7pm on Saturday.

The Fijians lost to New Zealand 10-nil in the pool stage of the competition.

The winner of the tournament qualifies to the 2020 Olympic Games and the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
